About Mr. Chris
Chris Sporer is a trumpet and piano instructor based in New York City who has experience with all levels and abilities. He believes in tailoring his approach with each student based on their own musical goals – whether they are hoping to master the basics or pursue music professionally – and strives to always provide personalized, enthusiastic, and productive lessons.
Chris began his musical journey playing trumpet at age 11. Beginning with the study of classical music, his love of music grew quickly, and he excelled in the Florida All-County bands. Under the tutelage of Jeremy Cadle, Chris continued to sharpen his technical skills and develop his musicianship, and ultimately earned a chair in the Florida All-State Symphonic Band his senior year. This foundation of classical music was later complemented by a passion for jazz, which led him to continue his musical studies in college.
As a trumpet student in the Jazz Department at Florida State University, Chris studied under renowned trumpeter, Scotty Barnhart. During his undergraduate years with Mr. Barnhart, he developed an extensive repertoire, high level of improvisational skills, and a strong understanding of the jazz lineage and tradition. Outside of the jazz scene, Chris was a featured soloist with the FSU Marching Chiefs. By playing the lead and solo trumpet chairs in the university big bands and combos, Chris further garnered his performance abilities and started playing various local gigs. In addition to playing in jazz groups and Latin ensembles throughout local venues, he was a pit orchestra musician for several productions, such as “Guys & Dolls,” “White Christmas,” “A Chorus Line,” and more. When he wasn't in class or performing, he offered private trumpet lessons to middle and high school students in the area. Chris earned his Bachelor’s in Music with a concentration in Jazz Studies in 2015.
Upon graduation, Chris spent time in New York City in pursuit of more musical opportunities. While there, he collaborated with other musicians in the form of jams and recording sessions. He also performed with bands at legendary venues, including the Count Basie Orchestra at Birdland Jazz Club. Chris moved to the Washington, D.C. area in 2019 and performed in funk/rock bands, church groups, and jazz big bands. In 2020, Chris returned to New York City to build on his musical experience and continue offering lessons. He plans to continue performing regularly, while sharing his knowledge and experience by giving lessons to aspiring music students.
